It is the muscles in their volume density and their strength that act as the measuring straw of success in body building. When all is said and done, a successful program is that which delivers mass progressively from stage to stage until perfection is attained at the end of a program. The popular talks about symmetry, about shape and about muscle definition are all subtitles within the endeavor to attain muscle mass. In the final very analysis, it is the muscle mass that remains as the defining element of a body builder’s physique.

And that is why, a body builder’s sole intent ought to be achieving muscle mass through the procedure and program best suited to his or her body. Different routes lead to the same arena and it pays when a body builder defies stereotypical approaches and conjures up the optimal approach those tallies in more mass within the shortest time possible. A mass accumulation equation that is designed to win usually has 3 components namely, dieting, intensive training and supplementation. These three are the basics, as simple as that, not as most body building experts make it alike to rocket science. However the success accrued in the body of an individual body builder varies due to different tricks used to arrive at a good ratio of the three basics.

Instead of doing everything conventional, a body builder will better build upon his or her muscle mass using an individually determined route, that has the three basics factored in personalized ways for optimal results.

One such way is progressive hardcore training that perpetually trains the body and keeps it at the maximal growth point. Forget the brakes, the go slows and the absconds termed as beneficial in most contemporally body building circles. Muscle stimulation is a requirement before growth can occur. So why go for breaks or sabbaticals as they call them. Train, train and when you have trained for months on end, train even harder. Simple, clear and precise. Keep in the gym, let the body remain on the growth path, never deviate or put a hold on the growth.

Secondly, endeavor to create a positive balance in nitrogen. Maximal muscle mass accrues from having the body in a balanced nitrogen state as much as is humanly possible. Anabolism is your friend, maintain him, pack the proteins in the diet, keep nitrogen in the system despite continued excretion. Eat as much as the weight you want to gain in complex carbohydrates, proteins and minerals.

Then rest. Body building exercises no matter how intense don’t result to muscle gains, in fact, they waste muscle, break them down and exhaust them. It is when a body builder is sleeping that growth on muscles occurs. The stimulation harnessed in the weight room gains results while resting.

Finally, seek for and implement the most appropriate supplements that can help augment any nutritional requirement in your body that is not fully met by the normal diet. Supplements help achieve the perfect state for muscle mass accumulation and they should never be taken for granted. And when all these are done, yours is going to be a different route, but one hat successfully brings you to the body building platform of winners. You never know, you might find yourself the best when you get there.

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience. Enjoying the culture of a different university is something that every student wishes for but cannot always obtain because it is so expensive to leave home, let alone move to a completely different country. There is also the possibility of homesickness and venturing into the unknown, and both ca unhinge even the most stable of individuals. These are the reasons why many individual students are put off studying abroad. However, there is now a way in which many individuals can study at a different, often more prestigious and yet foreign university without leaving the comfort of their living rooms.Studying abroad online is becoming popular amongst online students and has steadily increased over the past five years or so. Online education gives an individual student so many more options to consider that it is simply mind-boggling to think that he or she could be at home in Colorado or new jersey and yet be studying for a degree at the University of Liverpool (John Moore) in the United Kingdom. It may seem strange but yet it is completely true. There are so many advantages to studying at a different university or college away from an individual’s home country. The first is that the range of choice as far as courses are concerned is massively expanded. For example, a course may be offered at a university in the UK that is not offered in the United States. It would be a huge financial strain to send an individual student to the UK for an education, but yet would be much more affordable if the course be completed online. This instance is especially applicable for individual specialist schools that offer unique course content and often pave the way into a certain field. In truth then, an online university or college course could actually provide a route into a specialist job role that very few others compete for and can thus infinitely enhance the career prospects of many individuals.Another reason why study abroad online can be of benefit to an individual is that he or she would then have a working knowledge of another education system and can take the best parts of the regime and practices and put them to use in everyday life, which again can help to enhance an individual’s career prospects. For example, the university system in the United Kingdom has a fundamentally different structure to US universities and it relies heavily on an end of year test as well as several 3000-word essays throughout the year. This will enhance the memory and make a student more complete in terms of educational practices. Although studying abroad is usually expensive in terms of course fees, doing a study abroad course online can really save an individual money. With no housing fees and no transport costs, the money required to complete such a course is actually halved. As a result, you would get the experience for half the price and yet probably earn more after college as a result. Some online systems will actually offer study abroad options as well as home country options and yet have them all count towards the degree credit. Although this is extremely rare, it is available at some paired institutions. Before deciding to take on a study abroad course online, make sure that you have weighed up all of the options. Getting used to a new educational system can be hard work, so make sure that you are fully aware of the pros and cons of the situation before signing up!

Despite the many misconceptions about the HGV industry, there are many people who still consider a career in the HGV industry. As much as the HGV drivers don’t reflect an attractive lifestyle, they earn very hefty salaries for their hard work and have very good chances of moving into advanced positions once they prove their capability. There are many misconceptions about the HGV industry, the most outstanding one being that a career in the HGV industry is meant for men only which is not the case. As much as the number of female drivers in the HGV industry is less than that of men, it does imply that HGV industry is only for men. The number of female HGV drivers is slowly but steadily on the rise. This number could have been much higher if only the current generation could look beyond the gender factor and initiate a paradigm shift as far as the HGV industry gender misconception is concerned.Despite HGV industry facing certain challenges, it enjoys several advantages that other industries can only imagine. Some of the benefits of working in the HGV industry include your own prerogative to decide the amount of work you can handle, when you want to work. The other advantage is the flexibility of the working hours. For those without families, they can work for long hours and earn more money. On the other hand, for those with families, they are free to balance their time between work and family so that they are not kept way from their families for long because of work.Another advantage of working in the HGV industry is that the number of working hours have been reduced to 48 from the previous 65 hours a week with a minimum pay of 26,000 and a maximum of 34,000 pounds annually. This pay is far much better than the national average in other industries. With the technological advancement, the working conditions of HGV drivers have tremendously improved through the introduction of new trucks which are not only comfortable but also come music for your entertainment. The trucks also come with air-conditioning as well as GPS system that makes it much easier for the driver to select the best routes for his deliveries.Once you have had sufficient experience as a HGV driver, there are opportunities in the HGV industry for you to move advance your career in the HGV industry. After you have proved yourself as a competent HGV driver for a sufficient period of time, you can be promoted to the position of an instructor to train learners who want to become HGV drivers as well as teaching them all the skills as well as how to drive safely to successfully make it in their HGV tests. As an instructor, you will plan customized lessons for every student after assessing the student’s knowledge as well as skills so that after successfully completing the lessons, the student should be able to:• Check the vehicle for basic maintenance• Control the vehicle with confidence• Comprehend the driving law and Highway Code• Understand road safety • Know how to deal with emergenciesAfter acquiring good experience as an instructor, you will be qualified to become a specialist instructor, which is a higher rank in the HGV industry. This position involves training other employees for the company on site instead of hiring one from somewhere else or training one of the employees for the job.A career in the HGV industry is not a dead end career as most people think. There are a lot of opportunities to move up your career ladder in the HGV industry once you have decided to be a HGV driver. Apart from advancing your career, you will not only be compensated adequately at every stage of your career ladder but also retain your working hours as well as a very flexible workday. HGV industry has a lot of potential of becoming a lucrative career as time goes by especially with the technological advancement in the HGV industry.

I’d been working a 70 hour week for as long as I could remember. I was doing it for the family. So they could have the best things in life. Out at the crack of dawn, back after the kids were in bed, a microwaved evening meal in front of the TV with a large whiskey to help me unwind.
I didn’t see much of the wife or children but sacrifices had to be made. I was building a future, a legacy for my children. This was the most important thing in my life. I’d wasted my youth and was now determined to show the world I could make a success of my life.
It was around this time that I took a call from a management training company. No thanks, I said, like I need help!
I’d worked my way up the corporate ladder. God knows how! Sometimes pure luck but there had been some close shaves along the way. Like the time I was working towards my first promotion for departmental manager. I had such a vast workload. I had no choice. There was no-one else as capable as me. I couldn’t afford to let anyone else screw this up for me. How I coped I’ll never know!
The area managers job was now in my sights. All those people to give orders to. Maybe I could delegate some of the workload and take an easier route. I sat up all night working on my presentation. I was determined to show those in power that I had what it took. After my sixth whiskey the presentation looked perfect and I fell into a fitful sleep on the sofa.
Waking late the next day, I threw all my things together with no thought to my personal appearance. A little dishevelled, I realised, when I got there but a quick spruce up in the gents would suffice. Once in the meeting I began to feel the effects of last nights alcohol consumption. Sweating and shaking, I managed to bluff my way through the presentation and scraped through to my much prized area managers job.
My subordinates were not appreciative of my managerial style. They begrudgingly did what I asked but they had no drive. No ambition. They took sick days for stress related complaints all the time. What did they have to be stressed about when I felt like it was always me doing the work?
Another call from a consultancy claiming they could improve my departments productivity with some tailored courses on managerial training. What would they know when it was me, out there, doing it. And doing it well as far as I was concerned.
If I could just make it to regional manager Id be happier. More affluent, better car, bigger house, the envy of all the neighbours. Of course, it would involve extra work but I could cope.
I took it on and I took it home. Weekends passed in a blur with me hammering away on my lap top – regular expletives and shunting away of children occuring. But I did it. I got that promotion. So, I stepped on a few people on the way. These things happen. Dispensable commodities was how I saw them. If they didnt want to succeed then more fool them!
Then one day everything changed. I closed my laptop the evening before and went to bed with that last drink that would get me off to sleep. Well, it did that alright.
I remembered nothing else until I work up in hosptial the next day after suffering a heart attack. I will never forget my wifes distraught face. It was like seeing her for the first time. Holding my children I couldn’t remember the last time I had done this.
Of course it was stress, bad diet, bad life style, no work/life balance that had brought me here but above all it was my foolish refusal to accept help. I didn’t understand how so many people could get as far as they did and not end up here, in hospital, beside me.
I recovered well and returned to work but things had changed. The atmosphere was different. I was called into the boss’ office and their kindness amazed me. Without many words, my boss quietly slid a business card across the table with the business training and coaching consultancy’s number on it.
I conceded what I thought was defeat and gave them a call. With the utmost tact they put my life back together. I learnt how to deal with my staff, how to delegate efficiently, how to organise my workload and change my outlook. More importantly they gave me back my family that I came so close to losing.
Within a year I had recovered enough to get back to where I was. But with a difference. After several management training courses tailored to my specific needs, my staff were happy, I was happy, confidence soared within the company as the training was applied to all and business was thriving.
I also learnt to leave work at work and enjoy my family.

In the UK today, industry would struggle were it not for support workers mending networks and computers, while giving advice to users on a constant basis. The world’s need for such qualified and commercially astute individuals is consistently on the grow, as everywhere we work becomes more and more dependent upon technology. Lately, do you find yourself questioning the security of your job? For most people, this isn’t an issue until something dramatic happens to shake us. However, The cold truth is that job security has gone the way of the dodo, for all but the most lucky of us. Security can now only exist through a quickly growing market, pushed forward by a lack of trained workers. It’s this shortage that creates the right environment for market-security – definitely a more pleasing situation. Taking a look at the computer business, the 2006 e-Skills investigation showed an over 26 percent shortage in trained professionals. Or, to put it differently, this means that the country can only find three qualified staff for each 4 positions available at the moment. This one idea in itself clearly demonstrates why Great Britain is in need of many more people to become part of the Information Technology market. We can’t imagine if a better time or market settings could exist for getting trained into this quickly emerging and budding sector. Potential trainees looking to start an Information Technology career normally aren’t sure which route is best, or what market to build their qualifications around. Because in the absence of any commercial background in IT, how could any of us be expected to understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does? To come through this, we need to discuss a variety of definitive areas: * Your personality can play an important role – what gets you ‘up and running’, and what are the areas that you really dislike. * Are you hoping to obtain training due to a precise reason – e.g. do you aim to work based at home (being your own boss?)?* Is your income higher on your wish list than anything else. * Looking at the many markets that the IT industry encompasses, it’s important to be able to take in what’s different.* You should also think long and hard about the level of commitment you’re going to invest in the accreditation program. In these situations, your only option to seek advice on these matters will be via a meeting with an experienced advisor who has a background in IT (and specifically it’s commercial needs.) People attracted to this sort of work often have a very practical outlook on work, and don’t always take well to classrooms, and slogging through piles of books. If this is putting you off studying, opt for more involving, interactive learning materials, where you can learn everything on-screen. Recent studies into the way we learn shows that we remember much more when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we take action to use what we’ve learned. Courses are now available on CD and DVD discs, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Using video-streaming, you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how to perform the required skill, and then have a go at it yourself – in an interactive lab. Each company you’re contemplating should willingly take you through a few examples of their courseware. You should hope for instructor-led videos and a wide selection of interactive elements. Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where possible, so that you have access at all times – it’s not wise to be held hostage to a quality and continuous internet connection. Each programme of learning must provide a nationally accepted exam as an end-result – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ plaque for your wall. All the major commercial players such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco each have internationally recognised proficiency programs. Major-league companies like these will make your CV stand-out.

What kind of things do you expect the top of the range training organisations accredited by Microsoft to provide a trainee in the UK today? Patently, the finest training tracks certified by Microsoft, offering a selection of courses to lead you to a variety of careers in the IT workplace. You may wish to discuss all the different permutations with an advisor who has knowledge of the requirements in the workplace, and will help you select the more likely roles to suit your personality. Once you’ve decided on the career path you want, you’ll need a relevant course customised to be right for your current level of knowledge and ability. The quality of training should leave no room for complaints. Any program that you’re going to undertake should always lead to a commercially valid qualification at the finale – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting. The top IT companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA each have nationally recognised skills programs. These big-hitters will ensure your employability. Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as can often be the case, on the certification itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about gaining commercial employment. Focus on the end-goal. It’s possible, in many cases, to find immense satisfaction in a year of study and then spend 20 miserable years in a job you hate, as an upshot of not doing the correct level of soul-searching at the beginning. You also need to know your feelings on career development, earning potential, plus your level of ambition. It’s vital to know what will be expected of you, which accreditations they want you to have and how you’ll gain real-world experience. Our recommendation would be to seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor before you begin a study program, so you’re sure from the outset that the chosen route will give you the skills necessary. If you may be starting with a training company which is still using ‘in-centre’ days as a necessary part of their training, then listen to these typical downsides met by most trainees: * Multiple back and forth visits – quite often hundreds of miles each and every time. * Weekday only access with classes is usual, and with 2-3 days to book off work, this can be difficult for many working people. * And let’s not ignore lost holiday time. Most of us have 4 weeks off each year. If half of that is used up on workshops, then we haven’t got much left for ourselves. * ‘In-Centre’ days can get too big. * Class pace – centre-days normally have trainees of varied aptitude, therefore tension can be created between the quicker-learners and those who want to go a little slower. * Rising travel prices – driving to and from the training centre together with accommodation can cost a lot every time you have to go. If you only assumed a basic 5-10 classes costing 35 pounds for a single over-night room, plus forty pounds for petrol and 15.00 for food, that equates to four to nine hundred pounds of add-on cost. * Is it worth the possibility of being side-stepped for advancement or wage increases while you’re training. * Raising questions in the presence of other class-mates can make us feel nervous. Ever avoided asking a question because you didn’t want to appear stupid? * For students working away from home occasionally, you face the added difficulty that events can often become difficult to get to – unfortunately however, they’ve been paid for in advance. It really does make more sense to be taught at your convenience – not your training provider’s – and exploit videos of instructors with interactive virtual-lab’s. Any time you get a problem, logon to the 24×7 support facility (that should come with any technical program.) Keep in mind, if your PC is a notebook PC, you could study in breaks at work. It doesn’t matter how regularly you would like to re-take a quiz or test, on-screen instructors are never going to run out of patience! Also, because of this, you can say goodbye to note-taking. It’s already there for you. The final result: Reduced stress and hassle, saved money, and absolutely no travelling.

Do you remember that teacher striding into the room with the air and authority of a sergeant major? Do you remember that sick feeling of knowing that you had to approach him with a problem? Oh how first impressions count!
It is estimated that 40% of managers will fail at their post within 18 months of promotion. This is directly attributed to their actions within the first 100 days of their transfer. A sad statistic, and quite drastic in terms of loss of productivity for a business, but curable.
With the right management training solutions in place the above would very rarely happen. Being thrust into a position of responsibility, however much yearned for, can be daunting. However, training alone is not enough bringing only a 22% increase in productivity. Whereas, training combined with coaching brings a vast 88% productivity increase.
Employers can do much to help their staff with the knock on effect of boosting their company’s success. Effective training and coaching to ensure employees are ready for the responsibilities of management are a good start. But why not encompass all staff members to ensure job satisfaction?
Many members of staff have been lost to job dissatisfaction. They often feel unchallenged and unappreciated. They don’t believe their complaints are listened to or acted upon. Stress is just as paralysing to the lowly receptionist or typist as it is to the high flying managers when a work/life balance is out of synch.
Effective management training along with coaching will re-dress this problem to bring about a happy, industrious work force and successful business. Start with the managers, or more importantly, those approaching promotion, first. Teach empathetic and reflective listening skills, teach them problem solving instead of how to just deal with the symptoms of a problem and all their team will feel that they count.
Teach managers how to hold meetings that people come away from with a feeling of inspiration. Here, presentation and planning skills will come to the fore. Even the mundane activities of report writing can make or break a manager.
Nobody will doubt the importance of the work/life balance and management training and coaching will make the appropriate people aware of all this. A manager with a happy balance in his own life should ensure his staff are the same thus creating a happy, dynamic workforce without the debilitating effects of the work related stress responsible for work absenteeism costing society around 3.7 pounds billion a year.
With the correct management training programme, specifically tailored to suit the individual company, the majority of problems can be halted before they take hold. This starts at the very beginning with managers learning effective recruitment techniques.
And, very importantly in today’s PC society, managers will learn how to deal with undesirable behaviour from employees as well as being in no doubt about their own conduct. Assertive, aggressive and passive communication skills are dealt with along with how to present persuasive arguments without belittling the opposition.
On line learning is a useful tool on the path of management training and will assist in the route to truly professional leadership.

A recent Court of Appeal decision has potentially changed the face of UK discrimination law. In the case of English v Thomas Sanderson Limited 2008 EWCA Civ 1421, the Court of Appeal made the decision that the homophobic taunting that was repeatedly aimed at an employee could, in fact, be determined as harassment under the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003. This may not seem like an important case, and you may well be asking why this decision could potentially change the face of UK discrimination law? Well, the answer is that this decision was made by the Court of Appeal even though the victim was not gay; his tormentors did not perceive him to be gay and he knew that his tormentors did not perceive him to be gay. The implications from such a decision are wide-ranging, and have particular relevance for other employees who are being victimised in a similar manner. UK discrimination law contains similar definitions of harassment in the areas of race, religion (or belief systems), and age legislation to the definition used in regards to sexual orientation that the victim of the aforementioned case won the Court of Appeal decision upon. Consequently, this decision opens up the possibility that other employees in the UK may be able to make a claim to the courts that harassment has taken place and that they have been the victim despite the fact that the alleged harassment is not on the grounds of that particular individual’s sexual orientation, race, religion, age, or any other area covered by UK discrimination law. However, the legislation regarding the issue will not be made clear until an impending Equality Bill has been passed. The aforementioned case involves an employee named Mr English, who was in the employment of a company called Thomas Sanderson Ltd. Mr English stated in a claim to the Employment Tribunal in November 2005 that he had been harassed on the grounds of sexual orientation. He told the Employment Tribunal that he was subject to homophobic jokes and banter as a result of the place he resided – Brighton – and the fact that he lived in Brighton. Mr English, however, was not a homosexual. The Employment Tribunal judged the claim upon the grounds of the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003. Under section 5(1) of the Regulations, harassment is defined as ‘unwanted conduct by person (A) on the grounds of sexual orientation, which has the purpose or effect of violating a person’s (person B) dignity, or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment for person (B).’ The Employment Tribunal found that Mr English’s claim were not covered by the Regulations, and dismissed his claim. This was because he was not gay, his colleagues did not perceive or assume him to be gay, and he accepted that his colleagues did not perceive or assume him to be gay. Therefore, the taunting was not on the grounds of his actual or perceived sexual orientation. Mr English appealed this decision to the Employment Appeal Tribunal who dismissed his appeal. He then appealed to the Court of Appeal, which had been granted by the Employment Appeal Tribunal on the grounds that the Regulations did not allow for claims regarding treatment relating to sexual orientation. Instead, they only allowed for claims regarding treatment on the grounds of sexual orientation. The Court of Appeal found in favour of Mr English’s appeal by majority. They did this due to a number of factors, including that he was taunted as if he were gay, and the treatment he received was in relation to sexual orientation, despite the knowledge of the tormentors that he was not gay. As a result of this, it is likely that the forthcoming Equality Bill will expand upon the current definition of harassment on UK discrimination law, allowing other victimised employees a chance of making a claim to the courts. If you are one such victim, however, it is important to seek good, professional legal advice before deciding which route to take in relation to making a claim.

One of the reasons I got involved in multi-source (360-degree) feedback technology over ten years ago was the frustration I experienced as a management consultant. A typical assignment had me creating and presenting a customized leadership development program. I worked hard on these projects, conducted some first-rate training and was well paid for my efforts. The problem was, while the courses were well received, they had little or no impact. In a few weeks, most participants returned to their comfortable but ineffective habits. At first I blamed myself. Over time, however, I discovered that the problem wasn’t me. It had to do with the very nature of “soft skills.”
Hard skills vs. soft skills
In the world of work, “hard skills” are technical or administrative procedures related to an organization’s core business. Examples include machine operation, computer protocols, safety standards, financial procedures and sales administration. These skills are typically easy to observe, quantify and measure. They’re also easy to train, because most of the time the skill sets are brand new to the learner and no unlearning is involved.
By contrast, “soft skills” (also called “people skills”) are typically hard to observe, quantify and measure. People skills are needed for everyday life as much as they’re needed for work. They have to do with how people relate to each other: communicating, listening, engaging in dialogue, giving feedback, cooperating as a team member, solving problems, contributing in meetings and resolving conflict. Leaders at all levels rely heavily on people skills, too: setting an example, teambuilding, facilitating meetings, encouraging innovation, solving problems, making decisions, planning, delegating, observing, instructing, coaching, encouraging and motivating.
Obviously, people come to organizations with interpersonal behavior patterns already thoroughly ingrained, and they weren’t learned in a classroom. Instead, individuals learn how to deal with relationships and other life challenges “on the street” at a very early age. They observe how the people around them do things, they experiment, and they stick with what works for them. So everyone ends up with a unique portfolio of people skills; some behaviors may be effective, but others cause problems. By the time employees get to a training room, they’ve already worked hard for decades to reinforce the way they deal with people.
Like all behavior patterns, interpersonal skills are “hard-wired” in the neuronal pathways of the cerebral cortex. This means that at some point a behavior was repeated often enough that neurons grew dendrites that reached out to other neurons to make the connections needed to make behavior pattern automatic. A myelin sheath coated the cells like electric wire insulation, making the connection extremely efficient. The end result: these ways of behaving now feel natural, easy and comfortable.
The bottom line
Introducing a new interpersonal skill is extremely difficult, because it means replacing the old skill. The brain may be an information processor, but it doesn’t work like a digital computer. There is no “delete” key for unwanted programs. Behavior patterns are physically established at the brain cell level. Any new pattern, even one that makes sense, even one that is desired and expected, will seem extremely awkward. The only way to replace an old pattern will be to establish a new one that gets better results. If this new pattern proves to be more satisfying than the old pattern, and if there’s an adequate period of reinforcement, there’s a chance that new connections will establish themselves. If the new pathway is a superhighway, it can become the preferred conduit, and over time even a familiar path associated with lots of memories will eventually fall into disuse, just like old Route 66.
Ensuring success
Without this reinforcement, however, the pathways will not establish themselves, and most people will predictably fall back on the old, comfortable patterns they grew up with. Unfortunately, this disappointing scenario happens more often than not. An organization invests heavily in a people skills training program, no plan for reinforcement is in place, and the intervention fails to have the hoped-for result. There is virtually no return on the investment. The money is mostly wasted.
This is why a program of lectures, group exercises and handouts-even a week-long course personally conducted by a world-famous celebrity author-cannot by itself provide enough reinforcement to establish the new pathways needed to change ingrained behavior patterns. Without reinforcement, even people who want to change are likely to return to their comfortable patterns, and so dysfunctional behaviors remain the same. If this happens too often, employees may come to feel cynical about people skills programs.
Frequent reinforcement
What an understanding of the brain teaches us about learning is that the only thing that can create permanent behavioral change is frequent reinforcement over the long term. If someone who truly desires to change an interpersonal behavior is supported by a knowledgeable coach’s ongoing encouragement, new patterns can be established. The most useful perspective on people skills training is that it’s an essential first step-a necessary “introduction” to the right way of doing things. After that, ongoing reinforcement of desired behaviors has to be there. When a newly trained individual returns to a workplace, he or she needs knowledgeable coworkers to give ongoing feedback, guidance and encouragement.
A proven solution is the top-down approach
If executives start by working on their own people skills, then they can establish the right expectations and coach their managers. An organization can employ executive coaches to ensure frequent feedback, encouragement and reinforcement. Managers can then coach their supervisors, who can coach their team members.
To provide the desired motivation and accountability, it’s a good idea to assess people skills in advance of the training. By far, the easiest, most practical and effective way to do this is 360-degree feedback, which was designed to provide a reasonably objective assessment of skills that are otherwise hard to observe, quantify and measure. Identifying the weak skill areas has two huge benefits. For one thing, training programs can be focused on the areas of highest need, making the best use of limited training funds. Second, attendees will have a powerful motivation to change: the weak areas have been spotlighted, and a repeat assessment can be administered in the future to evaluate improvement.
People can learn how to work well together
With an environment of support, encouragement and reinforcement, an organization can achieve the desired return on a considerable investment in people skills training. But executives really have to want it to make the right kind of investment. There’s no magic pill-no short cut. It’s like losing weight. If you really want to keep the pounds off, you have to establish new eating and exercise habits. If you want lasting changes in your organization, you have to be willing to pay the price.
How to Get ROI on People Skills Training:
- Use multi-source feedback technology to spotlight needs
- Repeat multi-source feedback assessment to motivate and measure improvement
- Create a plan of follow-up reinforcement
- Define expectations for desired behaviors
- Develop skills top-down to empower reinforcement
- Include special focus on feedback and encouragement skills
- Employ executive coaches to reinforce skills

As your research has brought you here then it’s likely that either you want to get into networking and an MCSE certificate appeals to you, or you’re currently an IT professional and it’s apparent that you need a qualification such as MCSE. When researching training colleges, steer clear of those that compromise their offerings by not providing the latest Microsoft level. Over time, this will mean the student has to pay much more because they’ve been taught from an out-of-date syllabus which will require an up-date almost immediately. A company’s mission statement should primarily be on the best thing for their clients, and they should care greatly about students needs. Studying isn’t just about the certification – the process should be all about assisting you in working on the most suitable route for you. One area often overlooked by people weighing up a particular programme is ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is how the program is broken down into parts for drop-shipping to you, which vastly changes what you end up with. The majority of training companies will set up some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you complete each section or exam. On the surface this seems reasonable – until you consider the following: With thought, many trainees understand that the trainer’s standard order of study is not what they would prefer. Sometimes, a different order of study is more expedient. Perhaps you don’t make it at the pace they expect? Ideally, you want everything at the start – so you’ll have them all for the future to come back to – at any time you choose. You can also vary the order in which you complete each objective where a more intuitive path can be found. A number of men and women are under the impression that the school and FE college track is still the best way into IT. Why then is commercial certification beginning to overtake it? The IT sector now recognises that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, proper accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe most often has much more specialised relevance – at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Typically, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. It’s slightly more broad than that, but the most important function is always to master the precisely demanded skill-sets (along with a certain amount of crucial background) – without attempting to cover a bit about all sorts of other things (as universities often do). The crux of the matter is this: Accredited IT qualifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for – it says what you do in the title: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure’. So an employer can look at the particular needs they have and which qualifications are needed for the job. Some training providers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance program, designed to steer you into your first job. At the end of the day it’s not as hard as some people make out to land your first job – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; because there’s still a great need for IT skills in the UK today. However, what is relevant is to have CV and Interview advice and support though; additionally, we would recommend any student to bring their CV up to date the day they start training – don’t put it off until you’ve graduated or passed any exams. A good number of junior support jobs have been bagged by people who are still learning and have yet to take their exams. At least this will get you on your way. The most reliable organisations to help get you placed are usually specialised and independent recruitment consultants. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they have more incentive to get on with it. A good number of students, apparently, are prepared to study their hearts out (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when attempting to secure a job. Sell yourself… Make an effort to get in front of employers. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you. Usually, trainers will provide mainly work-books and reference manuals. This can be very boring and not really conducive to taking things in. Memory is vastly improved when we use multiple senses – learning experts have been saying this for years now. Courses are now available in the form of CD and DVD ROM’s, where everything is taught on your PC. Video streaming means you can watch instructors demonstrating how something is done, and then have a go at it yourself – in a virtual lab environment. All companies should willingly take you through some examples of the type of training materials they provide. Make sure you encounter videos of instructor-led classes and many interactive sections. Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where available, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – and not be totally reliant on a quality and continuous internet connection. Sometimes, individuals don’t really get what IT is doing for all of us. It’s electrifying, revolutionary, and puts you at the fore-front of developments in technology that will affect us all over the next generation. Technological changes and connections via the internet will dramatically affect our lives over the coming years; overwhelmingly so. The regular IT man or woman across the UK will also get considerably more money than fellow workers in other market sectors. Mean average salaries are hard to beat nationally. It seems there is no easing up for IT sector growth in the United Kingdom. The market is still growing hugely, and we don’t have anywhere near enough qualified skilled IT professionals to fill current job vacancies, so it’s most unlikely that this will change significantly for a good while yet.
